What is tokenization in regex? ›

Tokenization, in the context of regular expressions, is a process of breaking down a sequence of strings into pieces such as words, keywords, phrases, symbols, and other elements, which are called tokens. These tokens help in understanding the context or developing the structure of the text data.

Syntax: How to Match a String to a Regular Expression

Is the character string to match. For example, the regular expression '^Ste(v|ph)en$' matches values starting with Ste followed by either ph or v, and ending with en. Note: The output value is numeric.

[1-9] matches any character between 1 to 9; [0-9]* matches zero or more digits. The * is an occurrence indicator representing zero or more occurrences. Together, [1-9][0-9]* matches any numbers without a leading zero. | represents the OR operator; which is used to include the number 0 .

What is \d in RegEx? \d is not just a “character” in RegEx, it is one of the “metacharacters” for matching strings. By definition, metacharacters are characters that have special meaning while defining a pattern to match a string. So, \d is a metacharacter that matches any digit from 0 to 9.

If you wanted to tokenize the string into word and non-word chars, you could use \w+|\W+ regex. However, in your case, you want to match word character chunks that are optionally followed with ' that is followed with 1+ word characters, and any other single characters that are not whitespace.

Tokens in general are shorter form ways of describing standard, commonly-used character sets/classes. The table below describes the tokens available for use in regex.

The Match-one-or-more Operator ( + or \+ )

This operator is similar to the match-zero-or-more operator except that it repeats the preceding regular expression at least once; see section The Match-zero-or-more Operator ( * ), for what it operates on, how some syntax bits affect it, and how Regex backtracks to match it.

The \s metacharacter matches whitespace character. Whitespace characters can be: A space character. A tab character.

In Example 2, \d matches any digit from 0 to 9 after the last period, and {1,3} indicates that the digits 1 to 3 can appear after that last period. In this case, the regex matches any complete IP address beginning with 192.168. 1.. This regex also matches invalid IP addresses, such as 192.168.

The RegExp \W Metacharacter in JavaScript is used to find the nonword character i.e. characters which are not from a to z, A to Z, 0 to 9. It is the same as [^a-zA-Z0-9]. Syntax: /\W/

What is '$' in RegEx? ›

The $ is one of the RegEx characters known as metacharacters. It matches the end of a string and would only return a match when the text or string it is attached to is at the end of a line. This is useful in cases where you want to ensure that a string ends with a certain pattern or character.

How to Use the “B” Metacharacter in RegEx. The \b metacharacter specifies word boundary and \B specifies non-word boundary. Both reference positions, not the actual characters, but they match different things as they are opposites.

{n} {n,} {n,u} Integer values enclosed in {} indicate the number of times to apply the preceding regular expression. n is the minimum number, and u is the maximum number. If you specify only n, it indicates the exact number of times to apply the regular expression. {n,} is equivalent to {n,u}.

"Punct" is a predefined character class in regular expressions, and you can use it in any regex flavor that supports it. The Punct character class is denoted by \p{Punct} or simply \p{P} .

The \r metacharacter matches carriage return characters.
