It can be argued that currently we as architects design cities in reminisce over future thought and exploration, this could mean that our designs speak of past events and livelyhood, over future possibilities. My question is not heavily married to why we are designing in this manner but whether we considering having issues which occurred in the past, occur in the future? Secondly, are we as architects and urban designers saying our past cities were better or are we unable to think creatively beyond what was?

“Building design has become hugely technical and requires a lot of heads to resolve.”Sharing his insights on teamwork with Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI), Peter McGovern of Henry J Lyons Architects says that the complexity and demands of building projects today often transcend the capabilities of any single individual. It is no longer sufficient for one person to handle all aspects of a design project; instead, success hinges on the collective efforts of a diverse and multidisciplinary team to produce good work across various scales. Video Courtesy of The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland, segment “Is increased collaboration a way forward for Irish architecture?”__________This is a part of a new series where AHG brings you a curation of ideas on collaboration and co-creation from some of the leading thinkers and practitioners from across the globe, to highlight how #BridgingTheDesignDivide can further the fundamental cause of good design: making better products, systems, and environments for people and the planet. The power of design to shape a better tomorrow. In the latest edition of our ‘Designing a Better Tomorrow’ series, Creative Strategist Rachel Edmonds explores how to overcome sustainability fatigue by focusing on the incredible power of design. She discusses three actionable design principles starting with, 'Make it Flex'. This principle advocates for creating environments that are adaptable to our continually evolving needs and expectations. Highlighting the work of Haptic Architects & Ramboll, we see how it’s possible to challenge the conventional notion of buildings as static structures, enabling long-term relevance amidst ever-evolving societies."By strategically designing a system with flexibility as a core design principle, we can promote longevity and resource efficiency in a rapidly changing world."Learn more here and stay tuned for the next part in this series:https://lnkd.in/eQV4a-Nb#SustainableDesign #Innovation #ForwardThinking #DesignForTomorrow

Every year, the Notre Dame School of Architecture hosts an Accessibility Awareness Day where architecture students can experience what it is like to live with accessibility challenges. I love this annual initiative. As any product designer or manager knows, you can't create great products without getting into the mindset of your end users. Exercises like this are critical to understanding minority populations that aren't always represented in focus groups or usability studies. The same is true in software development. Individuals who rely on assistive devices represent anywhere from 1% to 14% of web users. However, screen readers aren't detectible in standard web analytics, so web developers generally aren't aware of how their software is impacting these users. Further, ADA compliance standards represent the bare minimum to support these users and represent more guidelines than easily-enforceable rules. This often leaves users with accessibility needs woefully underserved.Given the relatively small and/or unknown size of the user population and the lack of enforceable standards, product teams will generally have a very difficult time prioritizing accessibility initiatives. Taking these on is difficult, expensive, and disruptive with very little economic upside. I argue these initiatives shouldn't be prioritized at all. Accessibility shouldn't be a one-time project or treated as a separate initiative. It should become part of how development teams work - a standard set of requirements for all initiatives. This adds nominal overhead to each project, but becomes easier with each incremental ticket and avoids the disruption and risks associated with shooting for periodic overhauls to improve compliance.Audit and ADA training solutions like those offered by companies like Level Access (who I've used and recommend) and EqualWeb can be an incredibly helpful tool for product and technology teams to help make accessibility not just an occasional event but a way of working to serve all users.
